Blues on the Ceiling, Superpickers (CD Rowdy Blues 1002)

A great new album hitting the shelves this week is by Superpickers, a local supergroup including Sandy Morris (guitar, slide, ukulele), Glen Collins (guitar, bass) and Peter Narvaez (guitar, blues harp, vocals). The album consists of 16 beautifully arranged, acoustic based tracks that are deeply rooted in the blues but with flourishes of folk and bluegrass. Almost half of the album’s songs are original compositions by blues phenomenon Peter Narvaez, ranging from moving ballads (“Please Fingers Dial if You Can”, “Since You’ve Come Home”, “I’ll See You Again”) to upbeat, foot stompers (“Boat’s Up the Tickle”, “Vitamin C”). Lyrically Peter deals with some weighty subject matter, but tackles even the darkest topics with a sense of defiance and triumphant resilience. The albums liner notes describes “The Radiation Blues and the Chemo Drag” as “catharsis for those who have lived through D-Day (diagnosis day)”, and “Jump ‘n’ Play” as “heavy lyrics from a kid’s perspective.” Blues on the Ceiling is also chocked full of unique takes on some classic covers and traditional standards such as the title track (Fred Neil), “Folsom Prison Blues” (Johnny Cash), “Jump Little Rabbit” (Memphis Minnie) and my personal favourite “Grasshoppers on My Pillow.” The album is also peppered with a who’s who of special guests such as Patrick Boyle (trumpet), John Clarke (slide), Holly Everett (vocals), Steve Hussey (flatpicked acoustic), Crooked Stove Pipe’s Neil Rosenberg (5-string banjo) and Casual Male’s Brad Power (flatpicked acoustic). Check out Superpickers live 9 pm, Wednesday April 6th at the Ship Inn or 3 pm, Saturday, April 9th at Fred’s Records for the official CD release party.

Last night was awesome. Do yourself a favor and check out the release at Fred’s on Saturday (9 April '11). Fred's also stocks Peter's first CD, Some Good Blues (Rowdy Blues 1001), which is one of Fred’s all time best sellers.

Folks, these are must have albums by some outstanding musicians.

Sandy Morris (flatpicked and fingerstyle guitar) has made his living as a versatile and resourceful musician since 1965. An original member of the legendary Wonderful Grand Band, his more recent collaborations include Rasa (with Erin Best), and the Eight Track Favourites. Morris has contributed his own compositions, his performances, and his musical expertise to film and television projects for more than 30 years. His credits include backing up legendary blues great Big Mama Thornton ('You Ain't Nothin' But a Hound Dog!') and Arkansas blues showman Lefty Dizz (Walter Williams), serving as musical director or producer for CBC's Land and Sea, Violet, Tommy, the East Coast Music Awards, and Codco, among many other projects. For an extensive listing of his fine musical contributions see his website:

Peter Narvaez (fingerstyle guitar, vocalist, harmonica) has entertained Newfoundland, Labrador and Atlantic Canadian audiences with his performances of downhome acoustic blues, ragtime, and original songs for over thirty-five years. A remarkable fingerstyle guitarist, he has appeared as a soloist and group member (Cookstown Jukes, Rowdy Blues) at many regional, national and international fests and concerts including the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival, the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival (Fredericton), The Nottoden Blues Festival (Norway), and the Lee Delta Blues Society (Ireland). His critically acclaimed CD Some Good Blues has been the best selling blues CD at Fred's Records for the last five years. In August of 2005, Peter's thirty year reunion concert ("Da Boys Play the Blues") with fellow Newfoundland blues musicians Denis Parker and Scott Goudie for Second Stage Productions was a sold out, critically acclaimed engagement ('All three are superb players and recording artists, our very own 'blues godfathers'"). Hear and see two of Peter's performances of original blues on 'Out of the Fog' via YouTube at:

Glen Collins (flatpicked guitar) is one of the most sought after guitarists in Newfoundland. He has performed, recorded and toured with many of Newfoundland's finest musical artists including Dana Parsons, Kelly-Anne Evans, Janet Cull, Dana Parsons, Jeff Dyer, Peter Narvaez, Damhnait Doyle, and the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, to name a few. A consummate sideman, he has appeared on over 25 local CDs, and has also taken on the role of producer for two local releases. A longtime member of TaDa! Productions musical staff, he has been a member of pit bands for The Rocky Horror Show, Cabaret, Chicago, Divas Do Christmas, Divas Do Broadway, Cats, Tommy, Evita, and others. In addition to having many television and radio performances to his credit, Glen also leads two of his own groups: The Glen Collins Quartet, and Sonic Nirvana. See his Website at
