Steve Hussey

Hailing from Portugal Cove, Steve Hussey is one of the best known blues musicians in St. John's. His fine guitar style, played on a marvelous collection of vintage guitars, makes the Texas blues sounds of T-Bone Walker live again, but with a unique personal flavour. Among others, he has performed with Scott Goudie, Denis Parker, Peter Narvaez, Roger Howse, Darrell Cooper, Mark Green, Brad Power, and PowerHouse Blues, a band for which he developed repertoire and arrangements. From 1993 to 1997 he was a guitarist for the original alternative indie rock Lizband, fronted by Liz Solo. Today, he regularly plays in the high energy, Roma jazz influenced Duane Andrews Band, and when he comes to town, award-winning progressive blues harpist Raoul Bhaneja, of Raoul & The Big Time, always insists on Steve's guitar backup.

Steve has also left his stamp on recordings. He has appeared on Lizband's first CD, Six Songs, Duane Andrews' CDs, Peter Narvaez's Some Good Blues, and Superpickers! forthcoming CD Blues on the Ceiling.

Moreover, Steve is perhaps best known in the province for his remarkable knowledge of recorded contemporary music, which is on display for anyone who visits legendary Fred's Records, one of the finest, real, record stores in Canada. To quote Robert Young, webmaster of the fascinating website The St. John's Character Collection:

Steve is one of those guys that make us all proud to be Newfoundlanders. He is a locally famous musician, and a passionate educator. A fixture at "Fred's Records", Steve is one of the best sources of Newfoundland music information. He knows most of the musicians, producers, promoters and we all rely on Steve to find out the latest music. Keep an eye out for Steve playing in a local pub and drop by "Fred's" for the latest offerings in the music scene.
