John Clarke

John Clarke (Dobro, guitar, vocals) hails from Gander, Newfoundland. As a youngster, he developed an interest in music because everybody seemed to play the guitar. But nobody played slide guitar and certainly not like Johnny Winter on the big old National Steel! Hearing that sound made a him lifelong convert to the blues and slide guitar in particular. The interval between hearing “Dallas” by Johnny and buying a Dobro (and a 5 lb. slide) was a mere couple of days. Other influences? Fred McDowell, Muddy Waters, Son House, John Hammond and of course, Robert Johnson.

"What else is there until one turns to bluegrass (e.g., Jerry Douglas and Tony Rice)?"

"Lofty mentors? Oh well ... someday!"

Picking blues and bluegrass on guitar and Dobro, John has been a regular on the St. John’s scene playing with the likes of Scott Goudie, Denis Parker, Peter Narvaez, Kentucky Tundra and Five for Silver, at venues like the Ship, the Rose & Thistle and the Fat Cat.
