Newfoundlander Glen Collins has performed as a professional guitarist since 1986. In 1993 he received his Bachelor of Music (Jazz) Honors from St. Francis Xavier University. As a lead and rhythm guitarist he has toured regionally and nationally with independent acts such as Damhnait Doyle, opening for headlining Canadian recording artists such as the Barenaked Ladies, Kim Mitchell, The Northern Pikes, Alannah Myles and others. Glen has worked as a studio musician for regional and national CBC Radio and Television programs. Television performances include Wicked Night Out, East Coast Music Awards, ASN Breakfast Television, the New Music, Much Music and other broadcasts. Experienced in music composition, arrangement, songwriting and producing many genres of music, Glen has particularly enjoyed blues and jazz guitarists: B.B. King, Wes Montgomery, Mike Stern, and Robben Ford. He performs regularly with blues artists Peter Narvaez and Denis Parker, traditional artist Vince Collins, the Dogberries, a jazz ensemble, and in three of his own bands, the Glen Collins Trio (jazz), 1987 (an 80s tribute band), and Sonic Nirvana, an electronic improvisational group with guest musicians. CD recordings include Peter Narvaez: Some Good Blues for which Narvaez was nominated in the 2003 MIANL and ECMA categories as Blues Artist of the Year. Selected recordings include Dave Anthony: Mist Upon a Morning and Arthur Capelin: Cock of the Walk. Glen co-produced, arranged and performed on the traditional Newfoundland CD Lifting Out The Stove (2003 nominee in the MIANL Awards Folk/Roots category), which features the accordion music of his father, Vince Collins. He co-produced this CD with Bob Hallett of Great Big Sea. In theatre, Glen has regularly performed as a pit orchestra member for provincial and community productions such as: Annie (Artistic Fraud), Cabaret, The Rocky Horror Show (Ta Da! Productions), Jesus Christ Superstar (theatre Antigonish), Tommy (First Light Productions), and Evita (Beothuck Street Players). Relatedly, in film and television, Glen has worked as postproduction sound editor for several documentaries and television shows. In addition, he has composed music for a soon to be released short film by Monique Tobin entitled Leg of a Grouse. Finally, Glen has served as a peer Jury Member for the East Coast Music Awards (Instrumental category); Factor Canada (Jazz); and the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (Cultural Innovation Fund).
